exPLAINers of the Week July 16 – 22

By Perfectly Plain Staff

We scour the depths of the media to bring you, our dear readers, what the best explainer pieces are each week. This week we have stopped on two pieces that delve into the reasons impeaching Trump is near impossible and the fact that Russian President Vladimir Putin is more popular than the West believes. Jacob Neiheisel and Zachary Jacobson bring them to us in an easy to understand and fascinatingly interesting way.

Why Trump has not been impeached — and likely won’t be

By Jacob Neiheisel in Mail & Guardian

The Trump presidency has been a bumpy one, to put it mildly. With the recent Helsinki meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the stability of the U.S. President’s seat is shaking. Jacob Neiheisel examines the impeachment process, what needs to happen and it’s consequences. He explains that the majority that Republicans have in the House and Senate essentially make Donald Trump bulletproof.

Neiheisel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University at Buffalo and much of his research focuses on the effects of elite communication on members of the mass public.

The explainer is extremely informational, giving the reader the understanding of the impeachment process and who would take over if Trump was to lose his seat prematurely. The U.S. President has had a rocky year and a half at the helm of the world’s most powerful nation and it doesn’t seem like the scandals will stop anytime soon.

The Putin paradox: he’s brutally repressive — and incredibly popular

By Zachary Jonathan Jacobson in Vox

Many people in the western world believe President Putin rules through fear alone, but they fail to understand that he is extremely popular in Russia. Zachary Jonathan Jacobson explains that Putin helped Russia recover after the fall of the Soviet Union, and his people believe that he has their best interests in mind.

Jacobson has a doctorate of Cold War History from Northwestern University, and she has also authored The Search for Donald Trump’s Own Watergate. Jacobson has also been published in the New Republic.

This explainer was interesting as it explains that Putin’s long-standing leadership has some nuance to it. The Russian President is very popular even among the youth in Russia.
