We scour the depths of the media to bring you, our dear readers, what the best explainer pieces are each week. This week we have stopped on two great pieces. The first is Andrew Prokop’s expansive look into the Michael Cohen, CNN, and Trump-Russia controversy. The second is Dylan Scott’s look at the 10 most important Senate races this November. Both do a great job and their works are worth a read.
By Andrew Prokop in Vox
Late last month, in the midst of a federal investigation into Cohen, sources close to the former Trump lawyer made a bombshell claim to CNN. They said that, according to Cohen, Donald Trump himself knew in advance about his son Don Jr.’s secret meeting with a Russian delegation during the 2016 campaign.
Andrew Prokop covers the White House, Congress, elections, and really anything about politics that piques his interest. He’s profiled multiple high profile politicians including Mitch McConnell, Bernie Sanders, and Andrew Cuomo. Prokop has also written comprehensive explainers on the Iowa caucuses, the convention process, the Electoral College, the Congressional Budget Office, and others.
Prokop explores the controversy in a fascinating and easy to follow way. Even though Cohen approaches sentencing on financial and campaign charges, we don’t know whether the Cohen-Trump scandal saga is nearing an end — or whether it’s just beginning. I recommend this explainer as it not only refreshes the story in your mind but brings in great insight.

By Dylan Scott at Vox
The midterm elections are fast approaching, and there are some very high profile Senate elections. These elections are going to shape policy decisions in the United States for at least two years and determine how much of the president’s agenda is going to be seen through. Dylan Scott explains the 10 most impactful races and where those races stand at the moment.
Scott is a policy reporter for Vox who focuses on health policy and other domestic issues. He has also authored The very expensive, extremely close race in Florida, where he explains why the Florida Senate race is going to be the most impactful and expensive this upcoming November.
This explainer was interesting because the midterms are coming up in a couple of months and the results are going to have major implications. Getting to understand who the candidates are, the mood of the states and what the major issues are going to be was very enlightening.
